what is spirited away?
If you’re not familiar with this opera (shame on you 😟), I’ll provide you some information below. I also take this opportunity to invite you to discover this masterpiece by Miyazaki.
Spirited Away, or in my latitudes “La città incantata”, is an animated film from 2001, written and directed by Hayao Miyazaki and produced by the well-known Studio Ghibli , whose works include for example:
- My Neighbor Totoro
- Porco Rosso
- Princess Mononoke
- Howl's Moving Castle
Spirited Away tells the adventures of Chihiro , a ten-year-old girl who, without realizing it, enters an enchanted city inhabited by spirits with her parents. Soon the girl’s parents are transformed into pigs by the powerful sorceress Yubaba , forcing the young protagonist to stay in the magical realm and attempt to free them.
I don’t want to give away too much; after all, if you’re familiar with it, you already know; if you’re not, I encourage you to give it a chance 💪.
The movie is technically excellent and has been unanimously acclaimed by critics. Today it is considered one of the best films of the 2000s and in the history of cinema. It has received numerous awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in 2003 (75th Academy Awards).
digital drawing - first approach
Ever since I first saw this movie, I have loved its characters, their traits, and the overall artwork. When digital drawing technology became more economically accessible, I bought my first graphics tablet (Wacom Intuos Draw, at time).
One of the first subjects, maybe the first, that I attempted to draw was the one I will show you shortly.
However, drawing with your hand while looking at the screen is not an exciting endeavor. If you’ve tried it at least once, I think you’ll agree with me. Drawing in this way is more tiring and quickly leads to boredom. So, I abandoned digital drawing after a while.
A few years later, advancements in technology made it possible to purchase non-specialized drawing products at competitive prices and of good quality (at least for a newbie like me).
I purchased a Samsung tablet, downloaded a few drawing apps, and after becoming familiar with the device, I picked up my subject again and drew it digitally.
I’ll leave you with a slideshow of my work. I don’t draw much, almost never, but I wanted to give it a try. I had a lot of fun and I’m satisfied with the outcome. I hope you like it.
I’ll provide you some technical specifications at the end of the page.
